Alien Perspective

Alien Perspective is an immersive VR project directed by Jung-Ah Suh, with Christina Rambaldi providing creative input representing the Rambaldi family. While Jung-Ah made the final creative decisions, the project was built through an unusually close, fully remote collaboration: a three-person core team working across three time zones, developing the experience through countless Zoom sessions—often without ever being in the same room together.

In 2025, Alien Perspective was selected for Venice Immersive (In Competition) at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. The project was also featured at the Rome Film Fest as a VR installation open to the public during the festival dates.

Unreal Engine programming and real-time implementation were led by Gantt Reagan. I served as a creative/technical director focused on character development, visual look, and pipeline workflows—while also contributing ideas throughout the iterative process as the experience took shape. Both of us worked from a shared SVN repository, allowing us to contribute to the same Unreal codebase in parallel.

Creature & character work

The original alien creature was sculpted by Alonzo Von Threet, who also produced early motion tests that helped establish the character’s movement language. Building on that foundation, I created multiple creature variations, filled in the details and produced the final character animations used in Alien Perspective.

Some of my contributions

  • Character animation: Created and refined animation in Blender, including motion exploration and custom animation passes for final delivery.

  • Visual look development in Unreal: Improved lighting, mood, and overall artistic presentation in Unreal Engine.

  • Materials & pipeline: Developed a workflow to transfer detailed, hand-painted alien skin textures/shaders from Blender into Unreal while preserving the intended look, using a USD-based interchange approach.

  • AI-assisted 3D exploration: Used AI-assisted techniques to help translate Rambaldi sketches into 3D starting points for rapid iteration and prototyping.

  • Audio & music: Edited and refined music and sound effects, and contributed audio mastering/polish for final presentation.
